Ptos is

Ptosis results from a deficiency in the levator muscle or tendon in the upper eyelid (aponeurosis of the levator muscle).

Congenital Ptosis is often due to an abnormality in the development of the levator muscle itself. This condition is usually apparent at birth. It is rare and is usually caused by myasthenia gravis, a muscular pathology. It is surgically treated by muscular resectioning. In severe cases, when the levator cannot function properly, the eyelid is attached to the frontal muscle.

Acquired Ptosis is far more common, fortunately, and is often due to a separation of the aponeurosis, which binds to the levator muscle (the muscle itself functions normally). As the aponeurosis thins, it may rupture or detach from the levator. Correction of this condition begins with evaluation of the aponeurosis to exactly determine the site and extent of rupture. When the aponeurosis is correctly repaired, muscle function is completely restored. The procedure requires local anesthetic with light sedation in order to ensure the comfort of the patient and symmetrical results.
